Welcome back #fitfam, today we’re going to talk about the pros and cons of New Year’s resolutions. If you’ve been following this blog series for a while, then you are aware that I do not promote waiting until the New Year begins to lean into your resolve and make healthy changes. My opinion is that there will never be a better day than today, a better moment than right now to begin a journey, no matter what journey that is for you. I randomly decided to go back to college on a normal day in February of 2010. June 11th, 2019, I quit smoking cold turkey.

I share this to say that waiting for a milestone day or date only allows you more time to talk yourself out of starting your process. The 1st of the month and the 1st day of the year are very popular ‘start’ dates and in all honesty, unless its related to a pay cycle, I don’t operate in that space. Common popularity of New Year’s resolutions is partially rooted in the hopeful feeling that accompanies a new calendar year and is also a product of strategic marketing.

Whichever of the two most compels you, is the thing you should be most conscious of as you determine why you are waiting for January 1 to make a change.

Three reasons to begin your journey today include starting with peak motivation, able to avoid excuses, and reaping instant benefits! Peak motivation is of the greatest importance because I firmly believe that if you channel that motivation into some great workouts and eating, you’ll get those oh-so-important wins that must occur early on if you want to succeed long-term. If you lean into the first tip, avoiding excuses is a byproduct because you’re too busy doing great things to excuse yourself from putting in the work. Though getting better is a process, there are instant benefits, most important to me is the endorphin release after achieving something new.

I won’t provide reasons to wait in detail but I think the only thing that can legitimately stop you is a physical limitations from which you must first heal. Time, money, and lack of moral support are not good reasons to not start. If you’re broke, work a lot, or don’t seem to be encouraged by the people around you, I say this: Body weight workouts are available for free on the internet, if you can give 5-10 per day to TV or chillin’ on the couch, you can get up and move, and you don’t need a cheering section while you’re on the grind because it will inevitably fade anyway. Plus, I’m here to support your journey from a far and offer consultations as well.
