Welcome back #fitfam, today we’re going to talk about trying motivated on your fitness journey. The biggest issue that most people suffer from in shifting their fit life is staying motivated. It’s primarily why the ‘new year, new me’ trend continues to hit a wall for many people year after year. It takes about one full month for the ‘new’ of a new year to wear off. At that point, motivation for new things is also waning and fitness often is the first casualty. Sometimes we have random attempts at resetting our fitness life and it lasts but a brief season and we fall back into old unhealthy habits or some version of them.

So how do we avoid the fall off? First we must make sure to start with realistic commitments and goals, which we will write down and monitor as we go. It is important to add tiers to your plan so you can continue to progress over time and not try to reinvent the wheel overnight. As an example, I’ve always been into pushups but dual shoulder injuries had limited me for the last few years. Finally felling healthy, I decided to use January as a kickoff point for adding in pushups at a rate of 50 per day. In two weeks, I’d double it, after 4 weeks, double again, until I got to 400 per day. The step by step progression really kept me motivated by providing a goal I could achieve and often surpass daily.

The example is intended to frame out how you can approach a program that progressively loads up more repetitions over time. The same came be done with meal adjustments, cutting certain habits out and even adding new healthy habits. You’ll find that those scheduled achievements and level ups will push you to unforeseen heights and have you setting even more ambitious goals than before. The concept is achieve and reward and never stop building on your success. incorporating family and friends in acknowledging your journey via support and help with tracking can also hold you accountable and keep you motivated beyond measure. There’s so many manners of motivation that can be tested along the way and I recommend you try quite a few because you never know which style will be your perfect fit until you attempt it!
