Welcome back #fitfam, today we’re going to talk about why fasting is an awesome concept. In general fasting can be viewed as a tool or part of a lifestyle. Many fitness professionals cycle on and off fasting periods to maximize the benefits and make body tweaks that remove them from settling into a norm. In many religious sectors, fasting is an integral part of how they seek a higher power. In both cases, there is a chemical shift in the body that produces positive results for those who commit to it and fast properly. There is weight loss, mental clarity and habit shifting that can be used in pieces even after the fasting period is over. In my experience, I have achieved my best results in hardcore fasting such as sun up to sundown fasting or midnight to 5pm, etc. The biggest benefit for me is mental clarity because I meditate at meal times and use that time to plan as well. Intermittent fasting is effective for me too but I typically only use this style when I’m in a group because we’re all working together so its more of a team work thing.

If you’re thinking about trying fasting, I recommend that you do a fair amount of research to see which style is best for you. Some things to consider are your time allotments, budget, and reasonable expectations of what you can commit to. Even if you start with an 8 hour fasting period, it will pay dividends if you commit. Consider your schedule and fast when you’re most flexible to adjust on the fly, just in case. You may need to gather a few things to aide in fasting such as broth and nutritional supplements so be sure to have the budget for it! Reasonable expectations can be tricky because you don’t want to cap yourself but you must also avoid being overly ambitious on your first attempt. Ultimately, you will get out what you put in, so commit to it and do it!
