Hey hey #fitfam, thank you for reading! Today we are going to discuss one of my favorite fitness topics, circuit training! Circuit training is a combination of six or more exercises performed with short rest periods between them for either a set number of repetitions or a prescribed amount of time. In general, circuit training provides a combination of compound lifts (moves that recruit multiple muscle groups) and full body fitness compared to isolating or focusing on one muscle or muscle group. Circuit training is not for everyone, some individuals prefer to maintain a slower tempo and lock in on muscle group-specific activities because they are either working to overcome a deficiency or want to over develop an area. When I was early in my personal wellness journey, I was able to develop my back, arms, and calves with relative ease but my chest and quads lagged behind in growth. I decided to temporarily shift from circuit training to group-specific training for 60 days and was able to fully develop the areas that were deficient in my opinion. The choice is yours but I’m going to share a few reasons why I love circuit training.

The number one reason that I prefer circuit training is that it is adaptable to all skill levels from beginner to fitness enthusiast. The intensity of a circuit is determined by the individual and can truly increase muscle endurance, stamina, and overall wellness. What’s really cool about circuit training is that it is easier to stick with for longer than hardcore lifting or cardio-focused training. 10, 15, or 20 minute circuits are an excellent starting point for beginners and can be increased over time. 

Next up, I really like that you can do circuit training without weights and with limited space. When I first tapped into circuit training, I was working to become a trainer at Camp Gladiator. What I discovered was a diverse group of individuals of all different fitness levels and ages working together and performing drills with and without weights. Though we used a lot of space, it was due to the high number of people. Each person was able to execute in a small space and get a really burn in. Even after I left the organization, I knew that circuit training was going to be my niche. 

So far I’ve addressed skill level, fitness level, and flexibility as advantages to circuit training and I saved a great reason for last…energy and excitement! One thing is certain with circuit training, you will not be bored. During a session, you are moving from one drill to another, preventing you from zoning out and letting form slip or focus wane. Because of this, you’ll find yourself in a better mood because you are consistently hitting your workout targets and you are seeing results in a fun way. 

As I stated earlier, circuit training may not work for everyone but it is worth a try and you’ll be surprised by how fun and results driven it is!
