Welcome back #fitfam, today we’re going to talk about workout timing. What time of day is best to workout and should you stick to a time window to get optimal results? We’ll explore the benefits of morning, midday, and later workout sessions and let me preface my statements as my opinion based on experience and feedback from a small sample group.

Let’s start with early morning workouts…I enjoy them but I draw the line at being in the gym at 330 or 4AM, lol. When I workout at 430/5/6AM, there is a rejuvenated feeling that seems to set the day in motion. Released endorphins and a nice muscle pump make me happy with what’s in the mirror and sets in motion a positive outlook that ca carry me through the day and into the night. The key to early morning workouts, in my opinion, is to wake up early enough to allow stretch time and pace yourself as you have an entire day ahead. Late morning and midday workouts can often be a great experience but I often have concerns about the workout being rushed because it is sandwiched between two other task…sort of a ‘lunch break sesh’. When I worked out late morn/midday, I have my full hour allotment of time or more if needed. I used the time to do more isolation and slow tempo exercises because the gym is typically empty or, if at home, there’s less distractions in the workout space.

I believe that evening/night workouts are the most popular and have a higher success rate because of convenience, access, and the ability to easily find a workout buddy who’s available at the same time as you. If I could point to one issue, crowded gyms would top my list because it can be intimidating or discourage some beginners from getting in there. I say you push through the discomfort and you’ll find a new comfort in the form of like-minded people all working towards their individual goals in the same place. I like the 6-8PM window in the evening because its right after the work-rush crowd and just before the die-hard lunks show up at 8 or so to throw ahead heavy stuff. The crowd is a mix of savvy gym goers who have been going long enough to have solid routines, great advice, a good mix of positive energy and a testimony of some version of health success.

1 – Rope-less jump rope, available on Amazon – Approx. $8

2 – 5lb dumbbells, available at Walmart, Target, Academy, or other sporting goods stores – Approx. $12

1 – 10lb kettlebell – Approx. $12

1 – Set of heavy fitness bands – Approx. $15

1 – Long stretch fitness band – Approx. $6
