Dance competition is near. This year will be our third year of competition even though it feels like only the second. Year one was a learning experience, we only heard what competition was like but had never actually participated in it before. We learned a lot, and some of those things I will continue to share in the blog. Last year would have been our second year, however it was canceled due to Covid. This year as of now, it seems that everything will be going as planned.
Each year our dance studio hosts fundraisers to help with the parent’s cost of dance competitions and costumes. This helps out a lot. I have found some ways to help out with the other expenses of dance competitions, the food.
Our first time doing competition, we realized how expensive the cost of food was. We learned real quick that next competition season we will be meal prepping. Our dance competitions are most of the time a one to three hour drive from us, so hotel reservations are a must. I personally reserve our hotel as soon as I receive the competition dates so the spots don’t fill up. I always make the reservation as close as possible to where the competition is. Competitions can start early morning and often last until late at night, you never know until closer to the date when your child may be performing, so it is best to get a hotel room as close as possible so you won’t be late. With traffic considerations and everything, you won’t be trying to drive all over town, late at night, coming from a long tiring day of competition. Lunch and dinner times vary at each competition.
Our favorite travel snacks:
Breakfast:
Bananas, Apples and Almond Butter, Granola Bars, Bagels and Cream Cheese (you can buy small packets at the store), and Instant Oatmeal (heat water with microwave or if there is a coffee part in the room, use this to heat up water)
Lunch – The funny thing about dance competition is that the lunch time varies. This year with Covid going around, lunch time will probably be very different. Our cooler will definitely be used this year. Even if we eat out in our cars, we will need to pack a nice healthy lunch.:
Green Apples and Almond Butter (Make sure you cut them before travel), Lunchables, Soup (You can put it in a thermos to keep it warm), Tuna and crackers, Trail mix, Energy bars, Bottled water
Sometimes the dance competition is still going on during dinner time. I make a dinner ahead of time and then we re-heat it using a portable car food warmer in the van. Here are some of our favorite go to dinners while on road.:
Chicken or fish, Fruit, Veggies, Water, Poweraid
