Finding a Hair Routine as a single mom:The Struggle is Real!
Let’s be honest — being a single mom is already a full-time job (plus overtime). Now add daughters who need their hair done and trying to manage your own hair on top of it? That’s not just a to-do list — that’s a whole calendar of stress.
If you’re in the Killeen, Texas area like me, you probably know the struggle of finding a hairstylist who:
Understands textured hair
Works well with kids
Is affordable
Has decent availability
And ideally? Can do both you and your girls without breaking the bank
It feels like chasing a unicorn sometimes.
💇🏽♀️ The Kids Come First — But So Does Mom
Most of us moms will schedule, budget, and rearrange life just to make sure our daughters feel confident and cared for — from box braids to twist outs or silk presses. But then what happens? We’re scraping our own hair into a bun for the third week straight, or stretching out that “just until payday” style far too long.
It’s not vanity. It’s self-care. And we deserve to feel good, too.
💡 What’s Worked for Me (and Might Help You Too!)
1. Ask Around — Mom to Mom
One of the best tips I got was from another mom at the school my daughter attended. She pointed me to a stylist who works from home in Killeen and books both moms and daughters back-to-back. Total game-changer.
2. Use Apps Like StyleSeat or Booksy
These apps let you filter by location, price, and even specialty (like natural hair, kids’ hair, silk press, etc.). Plus, you can read reviews and book right there.
3. Try Beauty Schools
Check out the Paul Mitchell School in Austin (if you’re up for the drive) or any local programs. Students are trained and supervised, and the prices are budget-friendly.
4. Consider Mobile Stylists
Yes, they exist! Some licensed stylists will come to you — which is great for busy moms or for daughters who have a hard time sitting still in a salon.
👑 A Reminder for All My Fellow Mamas
You’re not alone in this. If you’ve had to cancel your own appointment for the fifth time, or if you’ve done a quick style with edge control and a prayer before school drop-off — I see you. We’re all trying our best, and sometimes that’s messy buns and mismatched scrunchies. And sometimes, it’s showing up at the salon — finally — and letting someone else take care of you for once.
If you’re in Killeen and have a go-to stylist you love, leave a comment and let us know about them. Let’s help each other out. 💕
