Tips and tricks for achieving salon-worthy hair at home

Everyone loves the look of professionally styled hair. However, regularly visiting a professional stylist can be out of budget for most of us. While it may seem daunting to try and replicate the same look that a professional stylist can achieve, it is definitely possible with the right tips and tricks. In this article, I will share with you tips and tricks that I use to achieve salon-worthy hair at home.

1.       Start with clean hair

There is nothing more refreshing than having clean hair and scalp. Invest in the right shampoo and conditioner suitable for your hair. For instance, if you have thin, damaged, or chemically treated hair, go for a hydrating shampoo that will cleanse your hair without stripping it.

On the other hand, if you have thick or oily hair, consider using a clarifying sulfate-free shampoo that will remove product residue and excess oil from your hair.

While cleaning your hair, do not neglect your scalp as it also influences how fresh your hair feels which trickles down to how comfortable you feel in your hair. Scrub your scalp before washing using a salt scrub or a chemical scrub. Also, massage your scalp while you shampoo your hair to stimulate blood flow to your hair follicles.

2.     Use the right tools

Investing in high-quality tools is essential for achieving salon-worthy hair at home. This includes a good quality hair dryer, straightener, curling iron, and brushes. Look for tools with ceramic or tourmaline technology, as these materials help to distribute heat evenly and reduce frizz. Additionally, invest in brushes that are appropriate for your hair type, such as a boar bristle brush for fine hair or a paddle brush for thick hair.

Pro Tip!

Never brush wet hair. If you have time, wait until your hair is 70% dry before combing through it. If you don’t have time, use a t-shirt or micro-fiber towel to dry your hair before combing through it.

3.     Protect your hair from heat

As someone with naturally kinky hair, I have learned to avoid heat as much as possible. However, there are days I can’t just resist the sweet siren call of my flat iron. While you should not completely avoid direct heat, remember that heat styling tools can cause significant damage to your hair over time.

When using heat-styling tools like straighteners and curling irons, it’s important to protect your hair from heat damage. Use a heat protectant spray or serum before styling to help prevent breakage and split ends. This will help to create a barrier between your hair and the heat, preventing damage and breakage. Additionally, try not to use these tools in the highest heat setting, as this can cause even more damage to your hair.

4.     Section your hair

Working your hair in sections will ensure you give each section the attention it deserves and make your styling process much easier and faster. Start by dividing your hair into three or four sections using hair clips or ties, and work on one section at a time until your entire head is dry and styled.

Pro tip!

If you often neglect the crown area, have that as a section on its own

5.      Master the Blowout

For my queens with straight hair, there is nothing you can’t do with a good blowout. This is why it’s important that you master the art of blow-out at home. To achieve a blowout at home, start by sectioning your hair into manageable sections and use a round brush to smooth and straighten your hair as you blow dry it. Be sure to finish with a cool shot of air to set your style and create a smooth, polished finish.

6.     Don’t Skimp on Products

Using the right products can make a huge difference in the overall health and appearance of your hair. Invest in quality products that are designed for your hair type. For instance, if you have fine hair, go for lighter products that don’t weigh your hair down. For dry hair, go for water-based products that will ensure your hair is hydrated even after styling. As a rule of thumb, always go for products that don’t leave residue on your hair. If you are not sure of what to choose, here are some of our recommendations you can use that won’t break the bank.

7.     Experiment with different styles

One of the great things about doing your own hair at home is that you have the freedom to experiment with different styles and looks. Don’t be afraid to try out new hairstyles or techniques, and remember that practice makes perfect. Try creating loose, beachy waves with a curling iron, or create a sleek and polished look with a straightener. Play around with different hairstyles and products to find the perfect look for you.

8.     Take care of your hair between washes

Maintaining salon-worthy hair at home isn’t just about styling – it’s also about taking care of your hair between washes. Use dry shampoo to help absorb excess oil and refresh your hair between washes, and consider incorporating a weekly hair mask or deep conditioning treatment to help nourish and strengthen your hair.  Alternatively, you can co-wash to maintain clean and fresh hair between your shampooing routines.

9.     Embrace your natural texture

There is no greater feeling than being comfortable in your natural hair. Whether you have curly, straight, or wavy hair, there are plenty of ways to enhance and work with your natural texture to achieve salon-worthy results. Experiment with different products and techniques to find what works best for your hair, and don’t be afraid to embrace your unique look.

If you are not comfortable with wearing your hair in its natural state, go for the style that you are most comfortable with. Learning to love your hair as it is a process that doesn’t come with a snap of your finger. Be patient with yourself.

I was just getting ready to hop into the shower and perform my usual hair care – which consists of brushing my wet hair and throwing into a pony tail! After reading this article I am going to use some of your hair care tips and hopefully look a bit more presentable today! Do you have any product recommendations to protect fine hair from heat? Most products I’ve used in the past just weigh my hair down.

Stephanie
