Welcome back #fitfam, today we’re going to talk about how technology is changing the way fitness pros help our clients. As some of you may recall, my journey to becoming a fit pro was not my first choice of career, it was Information Technology aka IT or computer work. During a phase when I was able to branch out independently and run my own IT consulting and media firm, I found myself with lots of free time to try new things.
During those free hours, I often worked on graphic design but most of the time was spent in the gym working out and training for boxing. To abbreviate a long story, a short-term battle with depression led me to become a certified personal trainer. I’m sure you’ve made the connection to the lead-in now – how my technical background helps me in physical fitness. With extreme certainty, I truly believe that I am good at what I do because of my technical expertise and ability to connect the two for my clients.
Within the first 90 days of officially launching Total Camo Fitness, I encountered the intersection of fitness and technology when the global pandemic brought in-person operations to a screeching halt. While most traditional, in-the-gym trainers were scrambling to replace lost wages and find a way to support their clientele, I was ready to tackle the digital space from day one. I immediately shifted my operations to Zoom featuring one-on-one and free weekly group sessions to help people feel connected to the outside world. I was also able to design and launch my own website which provided free, pay-as-you-go, and subscription-based services for those who wanted to remain on track while stuck in the house. I even created a motivational text program to remain connected to the most serious fitfam.
As the months went by, I introduced my clients to other tech items to make life easier such as tracking devices and software they could use to create health profiles. A nice addition to many arsenals is the body scan, which you can typically acquire from a gym that offers it without a membership, but for a small fee. The moral of my share today is that technology is the new wave and the technical tools that are available are things you shouldn’t fear, you should embrace them!
My wish is that my advice will inspire and drive you to the next level, please enjoy these tips!
