Welcome back #fitfam, today we’re going to talk about the power of leaving your comfort zone. Trying new things and venturing into the unknown can be a nervous and anxious time for many of us. While a percentage of the population is adventurous and always seeking the next thrill, the rest of society seeks comfort and consistency because it allows peace of mind. Unfortunately, its much harder to grow from a place of comfort and without change, we become stagnant and set in our ways which leads even more anxiety when change is forced upon us. To avoid such a hurdle, it is a good practice to continuously challenge ourselves to step out into the unknown.

Now, the way that looks for different people will vary, so there is no blanket approach that will work for everyone but there are a few practices which will apply across the board. I think the biggest thing for me is to understand that trying something new comes with the potential of failure which could be flubbing a recipe, performing an exercise wrong, losing money, and in some cases, possibly injuring yourself (lol, I’ve done all four). I’ve tried to make dishes that just came out all WRONG. I’ve lost money trying new business ventures. When I first started boxing, I injured my wrists because my punch technique was wrong while doing bag drills. So I recommend that you expect success but understand that it may not go perfectly, especially on a first attempt.

Anther tip I’d like to share is to believe in yourself and be courageous but remember that its okay to take baby steps to bravery. Not every person is going to go from afraid of heights to sky diving, maybe start with an all glass elevator ride and try to enjoy the view. As you all are aware, mindset is very important to me, so believe in making sure that I’m in the right headspace before attempting something new because I think it allows me to operate at peak performance levels. Breathing and going to my state of relaxation is a great way to get ready to for a new challenge, even a small one.

Lastly, get an accomplice aka a partner-in-grind, someone you trust to help you feel comfortable and confident and will support and encourage you throughout the process. Having a good battle buddy is invaluable and can really be the difference maker depending on the task at hand. While I truly support stepping out on your own, because the confidence boost is amazing, I also understand that some things are just better with a buddy than going alone. So at its core, I’m saying to do whatever it takes to yourself moving towards that challenge you’ve chosen.
