Welcome back #fitfam! Today I’d like to talk about goal setting and remaining motivation. During a few of my training sessions since the new year started, the conversation has come up regarding goals that have been set or need to be reset as the year gets rolling. A common mistake that quite a few people make is setting a yearly goal without preparing to take the steps along the way. This is problematic because its too big of ask and commitment because its equal to trying to eat an entire 8″ pie in one bite. You might be able to fit a significant portion into your mouth, but you cannot finish the pie in a gulp. Let’s discuss a better approach!
I recommend the following:
#1 – Set the big goal for completion by December 31st and create a reward for achieving the goal. If it’s an expense, plan ahead for covering the cost of whatever the reward is. Write the goal down, post the goal, share with three honest friends or family members and ask for their support in holding you accountable in a constructive way.
#2 – Plan 12 monthly and 52 weekly goals and write them down in a notebook or digital document. Refer to them often or even daily. Create specific checkpoints that will allow room for calibration if life events prevent you from remaining on schedule.
#3 – Make your goals a priority. If you truly want something, work is required and the tasks to achieve your goal have to remain at the top of your to-do list daily. This is where a check-in with your accountability circle is helpful because they will remind you that you expressed a desire to achieve and they want to see you get the very best out of your efforts.
This approach has worked for me in many efforts beyond fitness and you will be surprised at how effective the strategy is. Even further encouragement is that you can have multiple goals simultaneously and with proper planning, they can be worked together to get to the finish line. But be patient, its a MARATHON, not a sprint!
Lastly, I have training programs as low as $75/month that will supplement and guide you to your goals.
